First things first, this is not to be taken seriously, this may in fact be a bad idea, especially if the commando has a popular following, so I'm sorry if this threatens someone's play style or upsets suit loyalists, was not my goal, this is just thinking on my part, again nothing to take seriously.
Technically assaults and logis have already been near merged in the current logi set up, which at least 50-70%of the player base plays this already, as it is extremely versatile front line unit. It might also make the equation easier to balance if you did merge the medium frames. So that idea is an interesting concept to play with to say the least, but another method is the make Commasalts.
Seeing the Commando's poor stats, it is kind of relegated to more of an actual suppression fire unit where it has found its niche with medium to long range weaponry, though other combinations are possible. Its more of an unorthodox fighter, which is a pull all on its own, so I understand if people like to keep it that way and not merge it with the assault. At the moment the Commando kind of feels like the anti frigate class in Eve.
When looking at assaults lack of diversity/utility (compared to the logi), and was wondering maybe we could just combine the two suits, or in essence give the assault suit a second light weapon slot and slight boost in ehp, and obviously cpu/pg to compensate a second light weapon, and has cheaper suits due slightly more built in ehp.
TTK is low enough where one weapon is needed so a second light hand weapon would more than anything compliment first light weapons range or damage type which it is deficient in. So essentially Commasalts can kill more people in more scenarios, which should give it the front line edge that it is looking
I would imagine having a suit you like taken away sucks, so I understand if this isn't received well, but what are your thoughts on merging the Commando and the Assault? Or the Logi and the Assault merge (aka making it official after some tweaks)?
I also understand that we are far enough into the game where this probably won't happen anyways, so I don't think anybody needs to worry this is more for discussion sake
So what are your thoughts?

It just makes more sense that way rather than a suit with the size of a heavy but the health of a medium frame and the worst fitting options ever. With a commando light frame, you'd generally have more options on your weaponry with the added benefit of your speed. A shotgun-AR combo works really well, at least in my opinion.
That is another way of fixing the commando, which is actually what I expected when it first came out, because it seems logical. So I agree as there are a lot solutions here, what I am thinking in generally is we have too many suits and not enough roles, so I am thinking we are indeed in need of some reclassification or collapsing of suits.
Perhaps collapse the logi and salts into one suit and change the commando into a light frame? That might actually work, again just throwing out ideas and hoping other share there.

They pre-nerfed the Commando before release because if it was competitive, it would be OP. If they wanted to make a suit that was versatile but vulnerable, a light frame would have been perfect for the job. However, CCP can redeem themselves if they release a light frame specialisation allowing sidearm dual-wielding. You know you want it!
lol, yes I do, but I have no idea how that would effect balance, might be a bit tricky, so instead they could toss on another sidearm slot on the scout to have 1 light 2 side compared to the light commando's 2 lights, as commandos would still need to be stealthy like the scout, so maybe make them loose the equipment slot?
